Manifesto

At a time we can (almost) trust AI to repackage news and schools teach you how to best assist algorithms in newsrooms (or vice versa), we focus on what machines cannot do: original reporting. Finding untold stories. Asking questions that reveal truth. Writing no nonsense stories – with clarity and purpose.

Journalism isn't about regurgitating facts - it's about discovering them. AI may have some brains. It doesn't have legs. We walk the walk and do the legwork with you. It requires curiosity, skepticism, and persistence. To sit with sources until they trust you. To check every lead until they get you somewhere. To believe that the elusive truth matters.

Our approach is back to basics:

- We teach that a story starts with a sharp angle

- We practise interviewing as investigation, not just Q&A

- We train writers not to "tell stories" but to build them from the ground up

- We highlight ethics and posture as the foundation of excellent reporting

- We show you how to adapt the craft to video, audio and digital formats

- We practise the above with you, every step of the way, through immersive learning.

The tools evolve, and we embrace new technologies and formats, but the core skills remain:

How to find a story

How to report it thoroughly

How to tell it compellingly

The craft is old. The need for it has never been greater.

At BJA, we want to engage, inspire and challenge our students while laying out the fundamentals of a profession we care about. Join BJA. Learn the craft.
